How to Choose Art for Your Living Room — Without Making a Mistake

A blank wall can feel like a big responsibility. But choosing art for your living room doesn’t have to be difficult—it just requires that you start in the right place: with yourself, not with interior design rules.

1. Start with the feeling, not the couch

The most important question isn’t whether the artwork matches the throw pillows. It’s whether you keep coming back to look at it. Art that matches too perfectly blends into the decor. Art that moves you keeps giving—year after year. Pay attention to what catches your eye as you look through the artworks: That’s your answer.

2. Size is where most people get it wrong

The classic mistake is buying something that’s too small. A small piece of art on a large wall looks like an afterthought. As a rule of thumb: above a sofa, the artwork should fill two-thirds of the sofa’s width. If you’re unsure, use our “See it on your wall” feature on each piece—it shows the artwork at its actual size so you can get a sense of the scale before you buy. On your phone, you can even see the artwork directly on your own wall through the camera.

3. Think in terms of light

Dark, atmospheric works gain depth on a well-lit wall—and get lost in a dark corner. Photographic art with glossy surfaces should ideally not be hung directly across from a window. Walk around the living room at different times of the day before deciding on the placement.

4. Colors: One echo is enough

You don’t have to match anything at all. But a single echo—a note in the artwork that’s also present in the room—makes the whole thing come together without becoming boring. The rest can certainly clash. Contrast is what brings a room to life.

5. Buy the story along with it

An original artwork or a curated fine art print has something a poster never will: an artist, an intention, a story. At EvokeArt, every piece comes with its story and a certificate of authenticity—and for many pieces, you can hear the artist themselves tell the story.
