There are two kinds of advice on selling art online: the kind that sounds good on LinkedIn, and the kind that actually works. This is an attempt at the latter.
First, recognize this: Visibility does not equal sales
A thousand likes on a piece of art aren’t the same as a thousand kroner. Instagram is a storefront—but a storefront without a store behind it doesn’t sell anything. You need a place where the artwork can be purchased: with a price, payment options, delivery, and peace of mind for the buyer. Every time someone interested has to “send a DM to ask for the price,” you lose most of them.
Homes for Sale — Honestly Appraised
- Your own online store: Full control, but you’re responsible for the technical aspects, payments, marketing, and traffic. This is only realistic if you already have an audience.
- Social Media + MobilePay: Easy to get started, but fragile and unsafe for the buyer—no certificates, no real transaction.
- Galleries: Prestige and expert advice, but a 40–50% commission and a long waiting list.
- Curated platforms: A cross between a gallery and an online store. The platform handles the store, provides security, and drives traffic—you retain your artistic ownership and a much larger share of the proceeds than in the gallery world.
What Buyers Are Actually Looking For
Online art buyers are naturally hesitant—they can’t stand in front of the artwork. Everything you do should help alleviate that uncertainty: sharp photos taken in daylight (and ideally a photo of the artwork hanging on a wall), precise dimensions, an honest price with no “ask for price,” and a story. Why did you create the artwork? Two lines are enough. The story is often the difference between a “like” and a sale.
How EvokeArt Works
We built EvokeArt as the platform we ourselves wished existed: curated (so being featured is a mark of quality), with its own artist dashboard where you manage your works, prices, and artist notes yourself—and where every sale is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity in your name. Your followers can follow you on the platform and are automatically notified when you publish new work. We take a commission that lets you keep the lion’s share—and you can always remove a piece from the marketplace at any time.
